Gratitude.

My name is Jude, and I am helping Tim out with his initiative to hopefully find a strong audience willing to support this call for improved accessibility in the city of Edmonton.

There has been great interest from Metro Edmonton (article found here), and some individuals involved in planning/development for the city. Thank you all for this attention, and consideration for this project.

If you know of any ways the city is approaching these issues in current operation strategies, please contact Tim or myself. We would like our actions to be in line with ongoing work to continue the conversation.

Real fame

Fame is the by product of doing what’s right.
I don’t want people to thank me, for a Job the City should be doing, I don’t want thanks for a job that should of already been done. But, I’ll take the support of the people who think what I’m doing is a good thing and the support will give me the power to do much more.

We can.

We can all do better with shoveling our walkways and sidewalks in the winter. It keeps many people safe like Seniors, school children and people with mobility needs. Safeway could also do better by not setting up displays in the middle of the aisles which makes it difficult for people in chairs and walkers to access food isles.

Objective.

Mightywheels Objectives 1). I want to help my wheeled friends by giving them equal access to our great city. 2 ). I want to increase awareness of people with mobility issues and their struggle with limited access to lots of areas in the city. 3). I would like to increase my blog sites traffic to help more people. 4). When my popularity grows large enough, I wish to create a new position for city hall, called Accessibility Coordinator. 5). Mightywheels is my passion and job and I will be heard. Mission The free service that Mightywheels provide is a blog site to post and discuss poor surface areas you may come across. We will investigate and get the proper media awareness to show that there is a problem. The next step is to contact the right person or persons to repair this poor surface area. We don't take donations, if you like what we do, buy a shirt to help us with our advertising campaign. Keys to Success To Create a good rapport with Business Owners regarding the issue. To Establish a strong network of support with public. To Set up fundraising activities that will successfully fund the program. To Increase presence in the community the Public Relations Activities and Social Media Organization Summary Mightywheels Team is a free service that provides a blog site to post and discuss poor surface areas you may come across. We will investigate and contact the right person or person(s) to repair this poor surface area.

The making of Mightywheels.

Long ago in the 1980s, I was a big time adrenalin junkie, who rode a little BMX bicycle. My friends and I raced around town calling ourselves “The Mightywheels Team”. We all had little kid dreams of moving to Vancouver and being bicycle couriers. That never happened, I got in my accident and the team fell apart. Later on in my life, when I recovered from my injury, I was placed in a wheelchair and saw that the accessibility for a person who used wheels was very poor in my city. I wanted to do something. When I lived in Kamloops B.C I walked across a really high tech bridge that was new but was not accessible for people who used wheels. I had a friend carry my chair across the other side. I crossed the bridge proving that people who used wheels would need to safely cross the bridge. The idea of Mightywheels bloomed from there. In time I moved to Edmonton where I officially formed the Mightywheels team. I started a blog to spread the word. Later a friend taught me how to link my blog to Facebook, Twitter and Tumbler to get better exposure. I started a Pinterest page connected to my blog showing good and bad surface areas to plan out a map to safely navigate our city. I’m sure in the future my blog will have a virtual map of the whole city that speaks to you and tells you where the bad surface areas are.

Email to Ellen Degeneres.

My name is Timothy Maxwell, I was put in a wheelchair 23 years ago. Since then I have learned to put up with many accessibility problems. I live in Edmonton Alberta, it is a understanding city for people who use wheels. I am trying my hardest to advocate my Mightywheels team, so I can improve the city's accessibility more. I am presently working on an idea to help local businesses gain publicity for being fully accessible to people who use wheels. My dream is to live in a barrier free city, I would like all who live in my city to have that same opportunity. That is all I have ever wanted to do, is to help people who use wheels gain better accessibility. The more people who are aware of Mightywheels.ca, the more people we can help.

I would really like your help to accomplish my dream of helping all people with wheels.

Mightywheels.

Mightywheels Accessibility
I have an idea to help local businesses, it’s like scratching a store owners backs, well I get free publicity for my Mightywheels team. I know lots of little business that would like me to come to their store and show that there are fully accessible for people who use wheels, just like I did the other day for a company in Callingwood, (as seen on my Internet blog).
I’d like to present this idea to your boss and maybe he or she would be interested in doing something like that, to help enlighten our city on wheel accessibility. I’m sure by doing this the number of people who use wheels that travel in our city would sky rocket, and for me, my Mightywheels team would get seen in the spot light. that’s all I want to do is help people who use wheels gain accessibility and more people who are aware of Mightywheels and what we do, the more people we can help.

Help Mightywheels, help others. We are a wheel accessibility team that I created to help people who use wheels. We'll stand up for all people using wheels and help them journey through our city. We will bring attention to problem areas. So that everyone can access the city. This free service can be used by anyone, parents pushing baby strollers, people using walking aids or wheelchairs. Our mission is to help bring attention to difficulties people face every day, such as poor surface areas, poor city intersections, poor sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, and non-accessible places of business. We want equal accessibility, so we can all access our beautiful city. I am hoping to raise awareness for the struggles that people with wheels have everyday. Thanks for your time & we appreciate any help that comes our way.
I will not rest until the government uses a person who uses wheels to evaluate wheel entry, parking stalls, door ways and other access points. The government has improved a lot but there is still far to go.
Every day that I'm able to, I will post an idea to help people who look on my wheel accessibility blog.

Smiling Faces

The last day of Callingwood’s farmers market, my self and Quan's workers went around handing out coupons for free hot chocolate at the Tea House. The Mightywheels team could not make it there so myself and Quan's workers went around handing out the coupons. We feel the event was a success. There were lots of smiling faces on a breezy day.

I'm an independent advocate, helping people who use wheels. Before I got hurt I was gong to join the army and be a hero that way But, Sh*t happened, I got hurt and being a army hero was out. So, now I'll be a hero this way. Mightywheels.ca mission is to help all people who use wheels, from parents pushing baby strollers, people with walking devices, or people like me in wheelchairs. When I fist started to use my own wheels, I noticed many poor surface areas and wanted to create an internet blog to help other people who use wheels. The city has made many improvements, but there is much to do. Help is still needed for everyone, from parents pushing baby strollers, people with walking devices, or people like me, in wheelchairs. So, I went back to school to learn how to create a team of people that could help me with my endeavor, I call this Mightywheels. The teams objective is to raise awareness to the problems people who use wheels face everyday. These include poor surface areas on city intersections, poor sidewalks and sidewalk ramps, and non-accessible places of business. It is Mightywheels mission to work with all businesses to try and find ways to make them more wheel friendly. That way, all customers will have improved accessibility.

Stop Gap

StopGap, We are currently working with different volunteer groups in many different communities here in Canada by helping them adopt a StopGap Foundation Community Ramp Project. This project allows businesses with single step storefronts the opportunity to receive a deployable access ramp at little to no cost. Volunteers help build ramps and typically building materials are acquired via a donation or discounted rates from local hardware stores.

Another letter to BW

You guy's said you would fix the missing link in your sidewalk 2 years ago, it not dangerous in the summer.. So, I never used my big guns. but, now summer is ending and it will be un-safe for me or anyone who uses wheels to try and make it the sidewalk again. Because my worker and I have not seen any improvement, on your properties 69th street sidewalk. My people want me to do this by the book, so I'm starting with a letter,
I'd like some help, may I ask you to call Boardwalk Rental Communities at 1 800 310 9255 and ask they they will not link their sidewalk up to the Cities sidewalk on 69th Ave, Seeing that Tim even got the City to build a crosswalk with lights for access to the Edmonton public library.
The taxpayers paid for the great crosswalk with lights, so lets not let it go to waste..

help out Brian

Brian:  This particular stretch of sidewalk needs to be repaired now ,during the summer before the weather gets bad. I think that a smooth asphalt surface should be applied like that which already exists on the stretch of sidewalk where ETS bus stop #5963 is located. The asphalt surface is smooth and comfortable for wheelchair transporation.  In the winter the sidewalk from along the west side of 178 street from 76 Avenue to 69 Avenue is not properly cleared of snow fro the entire winter even when I make a phone call to the city to correct it. The city does not clear the snow nor enforce the bylaw to clear that section of sidewalk for the entire winter. as a result the sidewalk is impossible to use as wheelchair transportation.

I watched a mother struggle to push her daughters wheelchair to the school the other day. No point on her crossing the street on corner of stony plain red just to walk up three blocks to switch back to the side she was originally on

No complaining

I'm in a wheelchair all my friend who use wheels kept complaining about how bad the road are. so, instead of complaining with them, I took a stand and started up a project to help people who us wheels be able to have equal accessibility.

Spiritual awakening

I created Mightywheels.ca for everyone, parents pushing baby strollers, people with walking devices, or people like me in wheelchairs. Why don't people understand one person complaining about how bad the roads are doesn't work, it takes a team of people, power in numbers, so lets stop being treated unfair and merge to get our intersections, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps repaired.

Sunday 24 May 2015

Almost

This is the second time I almost got ran-over, why you ask because my landlord will not pave a link of sidewalk, their sidewalk doesn't link up with the city's sidewalk. I encouraged the city to build a crosswalk with lights thinking my landlord would add the sidewalk 70" link with out Mightywheels.ca having to pressure them into doing whats right for their tenants, without the them paving the link of sidewalk we are forced to walk on the road.

Action

My names Timothy Maxwell, I use wheels, I created Mightywheels.ca to help my friends who use wheels challenge the ugly intersections, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps. Through my life, high-school, collage I've learned that one person challenging our problem can easily be over looked, because they are not in that position. It takes a team of people wheeled or not.  Come join my battle we want equal accessibility.

I will dedicate my time and money to this cause.

Please drop me a line and become involved with us.

Tim ask's these 5 questions?

Are you a parent pushing a baby stroller, a person with a walking device, or a person in a wheelchair?

1. How do you feel city intersections, sidewalks, and sidewalk ramps are maintained in your city?

2. Which areas in the city are well maintained? What areas are not well maintained?

3. On a scale of 1 to 10. How safe do you feel it is using wheels in your neighborhood?

4. If you answered 6 or lower, what could be done to improve the safety for those using wheels?

5. If you answered 7 or higher, what makes your neighborhood safe for people who use wheels?

Email feedback from my last interview

Your interview on TV the other night both inspired me and angered me....

You are a wonderful person.  You are helping others, have such a positive attitude and are just trying to do the best you can.

I wish I could say the same about our City.  Timing is everything...we were just notified that our aging sidewalks are due to be replaced.  However, this is the process the City has recently established.

 - The City selects 3-6 neighbourhoods each year for “renewal” (100 of the 300 neighbourhoods have been identified as being in need of complete replacement)

- Property owners are then informed that they are to pay 50% of the renewal cost.  (Reduction curbs would be  included in the project)

-The Property then vote on whether to pay the cost of the new sidewalks.  (average 50 ft lot would cost $3,242.92)

- If 51% petition against it, the project is cancelled.  The sidewalks are then temporarily repaired and the curb reductions do not get done.

- If the owners can afford to pay, the sidewalk & curb reductions get done.

I am astonished that the decision to replace Edmonton’s sidewalks/curbs is up to the property owners of the neighbourhoods and whether they can financially afford to do so.  I am from BC and cities there maintain & replace all their sidewalks on a regular basis and with no extra costs to the property owners.  In the last 20 years Edmonton has upgraded 30 neighbourhoods through this process.  That works out to 1.5 per year.  In 2009 a dedicated property tax of 1.5% was established for “Neighbourhood Renewal Projects.”  My question is, how much money do they need to finally make our sidewalks safe to travel on?

I am meeting with City Hall and possibly our MLA today to ask some tough questions.  I will use the term “gross negligence”.  They have identified 100 neighbourhoods (plus how many business/park/public areas) of being in need of total replacement but do not have a proper plan in place.   After watching your broadcast I am amazed that you have not injured yourself yet.

You have given me the desire to push this matter even more.  I plan on finding out what the City’s mandate is on curb reductions and I will be asking until I get some answers.

Did Rick Hansen not teach us anything!

Keep up the good work & safe travels Timothy!

My show idea

Mightywheels wants to film a free accessibility reality show, where my team and I ride the city's ETS bus around, finding poor surface areas non-accessible businesses, and bringing attention to them. and commending the one that are wheel friendly.

We'll need help to do this, any suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

I believe

I have ruffled some feathers with businesses and property owners, therefore, many people have told me I'm pushing it. I believe I am not. People with disabilities are often not expected to master huge accomplishments in their lives, but I am not afraid to push the envelope, and I will not rest until my environment is accessible for people with wheels. In the meantime, I must give thanks to the kind people who offer to help others who use wheels, cross the street, when they are seen struggling.

69th Ave.

The sidewalk behind bus stop 5758 is not cleared of snow and is not accessible for people who use wheels. I would like some confirmation, on why the city is NOT removing the snow from that block.

UPDATE*** A big thank-you from all wheel users to the city for clearing the snow around 5758! Much appreciated!
