It takes a real wheel user to truly evaluate a handicapped door, handicapped ramp, or a handicapped parking stall, not some person with a measuring tape.

Truth 2

Many challenged people would rather talk to or complain to another challenged person, then their own worker.

What is accessibility?


We believe that it is much more then getting from point A to B in a timely manner. It take a community to come together and understand that accessibility the right to equal accessibility on a daily basis. It means more than just ramps, automatic doors, handicapped parking and elevators. It means independence and safety for that person, with the use of non-slip floors in washrooms, bigger turning radius’s for wheelchairs and scooters. Standards should be changed and go beyond just the minimum. For example a handicapped washroom requires a bar. That's a start in the right direction. But if we are in need of a public handicapped washroom, the bar cannot be at the back of the toilet, nor can the floor be linoleum. Both of these issues will not assist people with wheels. It is no help at all. But it is a problem found more consistently than one might believe.


Accessibility is also not limited to public buildings, it also extends into our own homes. Affordable homes with proper equipment is hard to come by. Therefore developers needs to be mindful about designing bigger kitchens and bathrooms, furniture areas, counters, stoves, and sinks that can be adjusted to different heights or designed specifically for people with wheels. But this will only begin if we shift our thinking. If we develop a positive and open minded attitude towards people with wheels, there will be fewer inaccessible buildings and bathrooms, that make my life and other's easier. So remember, we should not discourage, discriminate or limit people with disabilities (both physical and mental). They too have a voice, a voice that needs to be shared. It is why I began this website for Mightywheels.
